Oral appliances

SomnoGuard® oral appliances (also known as mandibular advancement devices) are used to treat snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We offer prefabricated appliances as well as custom-made systems manufactured individually in a dental laboratory.

How does SomnoGuard® work?

During sleep, the muscles in the throat relax. If the lower jaw and tongue then fall back - especially when lying on one’s back - the airways can narrow. The inhaled air must then flow faster, causing the tissue to vibrate: the typical snoring sound is produced. In addition to muscular relaxation, anatomical features or swelling of the mucous membranes, often due to various irritants, can also restrict the airway.

It becomes critical with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS): Here, the throat narrows so significantly that breathing is repeatedly reduced or stops completely during sleep. The result is a drop in blood oxygen levels, to which the brain reacts with unconscious waking responses (arousals). This nocturnal state of stress not only prevents restful sleep but also puts a strain on the entire cardiovascular system. In the long term, this can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, heart attack, and stroke. Daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and metabolic diseases are also possible consequences. Early diagnosis by a specialist is therefore a crucial prerequisite for targeted and individual therapy.

Custom-made oral appliances

Custom-made oral appliances are fabricated in a dental laboratory based on dental impressions taken by a dentist. They allow for individual adaptation to the patient's teeth and jaw structure.
