SomnoGuard SPX Schnarchschiene
What is SomnoGuard® SPX?
SomnoGuard® SPX is a two-piece, prefabricated oral appliance (also known as a mandibular advancement device) for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is accompanied by nocturnal breathing pauses. It is our latest development in the field of prefabricated SomnoGuard® oral appliances and stands out due to its delicate design. The device consists of a hard outer shell and a pre-formed thermoplastic material that softens when heated in a hot water bath. The advancement of the lower jaw is adjusted with millimeter precision using two connectors that laterally connect the upper and lower jaw trays. A practical holder facilitates fitting in the mouth.
- Thermoplastic material with shape memory property (fitting can be repeated)
- High wearing comfort thanks to delicate design
- Variable tray width for adaptation to jaw size
- Comfortable fitting with practical tray holder
- Millimeter-precise advancement adjustment; choice of 2 connector variants (with and without screw)
- Mouth breathing and slight mouth opening possible
- Also suitable for a receding lower jaw
- Made in Germany: Developed and manufactured in Germany
How does SomnoGuard® SPX work?
SomnoGuard® SPX is worn in the mouth at night. Two connectors of equal length laterally connect the upper and lower jaw trays, thereby gently moving the lower jaw forward. The upper airways are opened. This can reduce or prevent the vibration and fluttering of the soft tissue in the throat and thus the typical snoring sound.
How is SomnoGuard® SPX fitted?
The two jaw trays each consist of a stable outer shell and a pre-formed thermoplastic material. After heating the trays in a hot water bath, the thermoplastic material softens and can then be adapted to the two dental arches – like a dental impression. After subsequent cooling in cold water, the material retains its new shape with individual tooth impressions.
With the help of a special holder, the fitting process of the SomnoGuard® SPX is particularly comfortable. The jaw trays are successively "clicked" into the holder and held with it in the water bath or inserted into the mouth. A slot mechanism in the front center of the device allows for the adjustment of the tray width. By gently squeezing or pulling the trays apart, they can be adapted to the respective jaw size after heating in the water bath. Thanks to the shape memory property, the thermoplastic material returns almost to its original shape when reheated. This allows the fitting of the jaw trays to be repeated if necessary (e.g., if the fit is not optimal). The two-piece oral appliance predominantly encloses the less sensitive posterior teeth and only the front teeth from the front, so that less pressure is exerted on the dentition.
Fitting takes only about 20 minutes:
(Please note the detailed fitting steps in the instructions for use.)
- Heat the jaw trays for approx. 60 seconds in hot water.
- Bite into the soft material and mold it to your teeth.
- Cool the trays in cold water so that the material hardens again.
- Adjust the advancement of the lower jaw with the lateral connectors.
Below you will find a video that shows the fitting of the SomnoGuard® SPX oral appliance step by step.
For optimal therapeutic results, we recommend having SomnoGuard® SPX fitted and adjusted by a doctor (e.g., dentist, ENT doctor, doctor in a sleep laboratory) or their specialized staff.
How is the advancement of the lower jaw adjusted?
Two connectors of equal length hold the upper and lower jaw trays together laterally and allow for the adjustment of the lower jaw advancement. The package contains two screw connectors as well as a connector set (connectors without screws). The metal components in the screw connectors are made of stainless steel. It is recommended to start the therapy with the screw connectors and – once the optimal lower jaw advancement has been determined – to use the connectors from the set for long-term use. Depending on the length of the selected connectors, the lower jaw can be moved forward by approx. -3 to +6.5 mm. Small line markings on the sides of the device allow the set advancement to be read to the millimeter. Depending on the extent of the adjusted lower jaw advancement, the upper airways are opened further. This can reduce snoring and nocturnal breathing pauses due to mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
SomnoGuard® SPX allows for mouth breathing and slight mouth opening.
Who is SomnoGuard® SPX suitable for?
SomnoGuard® SPX is suitable for a variety of jaw sizes. During fitting, the width of the jaw trays can be slightly adjusted. The oral appliance is also suitable for a receding lower jaw (retrognathia). Especially if there is uncertainty in assessing the condition of the teeth/dental status or in the case of misaligned teeth or bites, a dentist should be consulted before starting treatment. You should also clarify with your dentist beforehand whether the very delicately designed SomnoGuard® SPX is suitable for you if you suffer from grinding or strong jaw movements. In such cases, an individually "custom-made" appliance produced in a dental laboratory, such as the SomnoGuard® SP Pro, may be more suitable for you.
Information on indications and contraindications can be found in our instructions for use.
Care and Storage:
The SomnoGuard® SPX comes with a storage box, making the device an ideal travel companion.
For the gentle care of our thermoplastic oral appliances, we recommend the Curaprox "daily" cleaning gel for daily care and the Curaprox "weekly" cleaning concentrate for dilution for the weekly intensive cleaning bath. The Curaprox cleaning box facilitates the cleaning bath thanks to a practical insert sieve and can also be used as a storage container.
Notes:
The average lifespan of the SomnoGuard® SPX oral appliance is approx. 1 – 1 ½ years. In cases of teeth grinding (bruxism) or strong jaw movements, the lifespan may be significantly reduced.
Further information about SomnoGuard® SPX (e.g., side effects, warnings, fitting process) can be found in our instructions for use. SomnoGuard® SPX is patented.
