What is SomnoGuard® SP Soft?
SomnoGuard® SP Soft is a two-piece, prefabricated oral appliance (so-called mandibular advancement device) for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is associated with nocturnal breathing pauses. The oral appliance consists of a hard outer shell and a thermoplastic filling material that softens when heated in a hot water bath. The advancement of the lower jaw is adjusted gradually and with millimeter precision using two connectors that laterally connect the upper and lower jaw trays.
- Millimeter-precise adjustable mandibular advancement of approx. -3 to +10 mm
- Mouth breathing and slight mouth opening possible
- Contains no metallic components
- Also suitable for a receding lower jaw
- Made in Germany: Developed and manufactured in Germany
How does SomnoGuard® SP Soft work?
SomnoGuard® SP Soft is worn in the mouth at night. Two connectors of the same length laterally connect the upper and lower jaw trays and gently move the lower jaw forward. The upper airways are opened. This can reduce or prevent the vibration and fluttering of the soft tissue in the throat and thus the typical snoring sound.
How is SomnoGuard® SP Soft fitted?
SomnoGuard® SP Soft is fitted using the "boil-and-bite method." The two jaw trays each consist of a stable outer shell and a thermoplastic filling material. After heating the trays in boiling water, the thermoplastic material becomes soft. By biting down, it molds to the individual tooth formation – comparable to a dental impression. After subsequent cooling in cold water, the material retains its new shape with individual tooth impressions.
Fitting takes only about 20 minutes:
(Please note the detailed fitting steps in the instructions for use.)
- Heat the jaw trays for approx. 3 ½ min. in boiling water.
- Bite into the soft filling material. It will mold to your teeth.
- Cool the trays in cold water so the material hardens again.
- Adjust the advancement of the lower jaw with the lateral connectors.
Further down you will find a video that shows the fitting process of the SomnoGuard® SP Soft oral appliance step by step.
For optimal therapeutic results, we recommend having SomnoGuard® SP Soft fitted and adjusted by a doctor (e.g., dentist, ENT doctor, sleep lab doctor) or their specialized staff.
How is the advancement of the lower jaw adjusted?
Two connectors of the same length hold the upper and lower jaw trays together laterally and allow for the adjustment of the lower jaw advancement. Connectors of different lengths are supplied in a set. Depending on the length of the selected connectors, the lower jaw can be advanced from approx. -3 to +10 mm in 1 mm increments. Small line markings on the sides of the appliance allow the adjusted advancement to be read with millimeter precision. Depending on the extent of the adjusted lower jaw advancement, the upper airways are opened wider. Snoring and nocturnal breathing pauses due to mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea can thus be reduced.
SomnoGuard® SP Soft allows for mouth breathing and a slight mouth opening.
Who is SomnoGuard® SP Soft suitable for?
SomnoGuard® SP Soft is recommended for smaller to medium-sized jaws. The oral appliance is also suitable for a receding lower jaw (retrognathia). Especially if there is uncertainty in assessing the condition of the teeth/dental status or in the case of misaligned teeth or bites, a dentist should be consulted before starting treatment. Information on indications and contraindications can be found in our instructions for use.
Care and Storage:
SomnoGuard® SP Soft comes with a storage box, making the device an ideal travel companion.
For gentle cleaning of our thermoplastic oral appliances, we recommend the Curaprox "daily" cleaning gel for daily care and the Curaprox "weekly" cleaning concentrate for dilution for the weekly intensive cleaning bath. The Curaprox cleaning box facilitates the cleaning bath thanks to its practical insert sieve and can also be used as a storage container.
Notes:
The average lifespan of the SomnoGuard® SP Soft oral appliance is approx. 1 ½ years. In cases of teeth grinding (bruxism) or strong jaw movements, the lifespan may be significantly shortened.
Further information about SomnoGuard® SP Soft (e.g., side effects, warnings, fitting process) can be found in our instructions for use. SomnoGuard® SP Soft is patented.
