SomnoGuard AP 2 Schnarchschiene
What is SomnoGuard® AP 2?
SomnoGuard® AP 2 is a two-piece, prefabricated oral appliance in its 2nd generation. The mandibular advancement device is used to treat snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is accompanied by nocturnal breathing pauses. The oral appliance consists of a hard outer shell and a thermoplastic filling material that softens when heated in a hot water bath. The lower jaw advancement is adjusted continuously and to the millimeter by turning a small stainless steel screw.
- Continuously and precisely adjustable mandibular advancement from 0 to approx. 10 mm
- Lateral mobility of the lower jaw
- Mouth breathing possible through gap between upper and lower jaw trays
- Particularly stable construction
- Efficacy of SomnoGuard® AP proven in studies*
- Made in Germany: Developed and manufactured in Germany
How does SomnoGuard® AP 2 work?
SomnoGuard® AP 2 is worn in the mouth at night. A small stainless steel screw connects the upper and lower jaw trays and gently moves the lower jaw forward. The upper airways are opened. This can reduce or prevent the vibration and fluttering of the soft tissue in the throat and thus the typical snoring sound.
How is SomnoGuard® AP 2 fitted?
SomnoGuard® AP 2 is fitted using the "boil-and-bite method". The two jaw trays each consist of a stable outer shell and a thermoplastic filling material. After heating the trays in boiling water, the thermoplastic material softens. By biting down, it molds to the individual tooth formation – comparable to a dental impression. After subsequent cooling in cold water, the material retains its new shape with individual tooth impressions.
Fitting takes only about 20 minutes:
(Please note the detailed fitting steps in the instructions for use.)
- Heat the jaw trays for approx. 3 ½ min. in boiling water.
- Bite into the soft filling material. It will mold to your teeth.
- Cool the trays in cold water so that the material hardens again.
- Adjust the advancement of the lower jaw by turning the small stainless steel screw.
Below you will find a video that shows the fitting of the SomnoGuard® AP 2 oral appliance step by step.
For an optimal therapeutic result, we recommend having SomnoGuard® AP 2 fitted and adjusted by a doctor (e.g. dentist, ENT doctor, sleep lab doctor) or their specialist staff.
How is the advancement of the lower jaw adjusted?
A small stainless steel screw in the front area of the appliance holds the upper and lower jaw trays together and allows the lower jaw advancement to be adjusted. The guide groove on the underside of the upper jaw tray forms the lateral guide for the screw head of the lower jaw tray. By turning the screw, the lower jaw advancement can be adjusted continuously from 0 to approx. 10 mm. Small line markings on the sides of the device allow the set advancement to be read to the millimeter. Depending on the extent of the adjusted mandibular advancement, the upper airways are opened wider. Snoring and nocturnal breathing pauses resulting from mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea can thus be reduced.
SomnoGuard® AP 2 allows mouth breathing and lateral mobility of the lower jaw.
Who is SomnoGuard® AP 2 suitable for?
SomnoGuard® AP 2 is recommended for neutral bite and medium to larger jaw size. In addition, due to the lateral mobility of the lower jaw, the oral appliance is also suitable for teeth grinding. However, it is not a classic nightguard for bruxism patients. SomnoGuard® AP 2 is only conditionally or not at all suitable for a receding lower jaw (retrognathia), depending on the severity. Especially in cases of uncertainty in assessing the condition of the teeth/dental status or in the case of tooth or bite misalignments, a dentist should be consulted before starting treatment. Information on indications and contraindications can be found in our instructions for use.
Care and Storage:
SomnoGuard® AP 2 comes with a storage box, making the device an ideal travel companion.
For gentle care of our thermoplastic oral appliances, we recommend the Curaprox "daily" cleaning gel for daily care and the Curaprox "weekly" cleaning concentrate for dilution for the weekly intensive cleaning bath. The Curaprox cleaning box facilitates the cleaning bath thanks to its practical insert sieve and can also be used as a storage container.
Notes:
The average lifespan of the SomnoGuard® AP 2 oral appliance is approx. 1 ½ years. In cases of teeth grinding (bruxism) or strong jaw movements, the lifespan may be significantly shorter.
Further information about SomnoGuard® AP 2 (e.g. side effects, warnings, fitting process) can be found in our instructions for use. SomnoGuard® AP 2 is patented.
