What is SomnoGuard® AP 2?

SomnoGuard® AP 2 is a two-piece, prefabricated mandibular advancement device for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is associated with breathing stops at night. SomnoGuard® AP 2 is the further development of our proven SomnoGuard® AP oral appliance. The advancement of the lower jaw is adjusted infinitely and with millimeter precision by turning a small stainless steel screw.
  • Infinitely adjustable advancement of the lower jaw from 0 to approx. 10 mm
  • Stable construction
  • Lateral movement of the lower jaw
  • Mouth breathing possible through the gap between the upper and lower jaw tray
  • Efficacy of SomnoGuard® AP proven in studies*
  • Further development of SomnoGuard® AP: less material increases comfort, less bite block, more stability, scale for better control of the lower jaw advancement
  • Made in Germany

How does SomnoGuard® AP 2 work?

SomnoGuard® AP 2 is placed in the mouth at night. By turning the small stainless steel screw located between the upper and lower jaw, the lower jaw is advanced slightly forward with the tongue. The upper airways are opened. The vibration and fluttering of the soft tissue in the throat (soft palate and uvula), which are responsible for the typical snoring noise, can be reduced or prevented.

How is SomnoGuard® AP 2 adjusted?

The two jaw trays each consist of a stable outer shell and a thermoplastic filling material. After heating the trays in a boiling water bath, the thermoplastic material softens. By biting the teeth into the material, it forms according to the individual tooth formation - comparable to a dental impression. After subsequent cooling in cold water, the material retains the new shape with individual tooth impressions. The fitting process can be repeated if necessary (e.g. if the jaw trays do not fit optimally).

The adjustment only takes about 20 minutes:

(Please also note the detailed instructions for use.)
  1. Heat the oral trays in boiling water for about 3 ½ minutes.
  2. Bite into the soft filling material. It forms according to the teeth.
  3. Cool the trays in cold water so that the material hardens again.
  4. Adjust the advancement of the lower jaw by turning the small stainless steel screw.

How is the advancement of the lower jaw adjusted?

The upper and lower jaw trays are connected to each other with a small stainless steel screw. The part with the guide bar characterises the upper tray designed for the upper jaw. The guide bar is the track for the screw head of the lower tray. By turning the screw, the advancement of the lower jaw can be infinitely adjusted from 0 to approx. 10 mm. Small line markings on the sides of the appliance allow the advancement to be read off with millimeter precision. SomnoGuard® AP 2 allows mouth breathing and a lateral movement of the lower jaw.
Depending on the extent of the set lower jaw advancement, the upper airways are more open. Snoring and nocturnal breathing pauses as a result of obstructive sleep apnea can be reduced in this way.
For an optimal therapeutic result, it is recommended that SomnoGuard® AP 2 is fitted and adjusted by a doctor (e.g. ENT doctor, doctor in a sleep laboratory, dentist) or their specialist staff.

Who is SomnoGuard® AP 2 suitable for?

We recommend SomnoGuard® AP 2 for neutral bite and medium to large jaws. In addition, the oral appliance is also suitable in case of teeth grinding due to the lateral movement of the lower jaw. However, it is not a classic appliance for bruxism patients. For patients with a retrognathic bite, SomnoGuard® AP 2 is suitable to only a limited extent. If there is any uncertainty in the assessment of the condition of the teeth or if there are pronounced tooth or bite misalignments, a dentist should be consulted before the start of treatment.

The thermoplastic filling material is medically safe and biocompatible. It contains no allergens, no latex, no silicone and no plasticizers (such as BPA).

Each prefabricated SomnoGuard® comes with a storage box, which makes the appliance a practical travel companion. For gentle care of our prefabricated appliances, we recommend the Curaprox "daily" cleaning gel (daily cleaning) and Curaprox "weekly" cleaning concentrate (weekly intensive care).

SomnoGuard® AP 2 is patented.
